Draft Assignment 3

Hi everyone,

I've attached my draft Assignment #3 below.

Word doc:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzSIRoM-nThBbWtmUjBzSzM4RTA/view?usp=sharing

Excel doc:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzSIRoM-nThBTlZKS0lJdHRfSk0/view?usp=sharing

I've been having some difficulties trying to think of what capital investment to propose for this assignment and how to work out the figures as we currently don't have any 'sales' so how do we work out the projected income from what ever the item(s) is?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all and good luck on our last assignment.

Spreadsheet Ass#2

Ok, I've had another look at my spreadsheet and completed it.  I'm not very confident with the ending of the Restated Income Statement.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzSIRoM-nThBYU5DZnplelY4QWs/view?usp=sharing

Thank you to Alex for advising me to only use 1% cash, I had thought about that, it has now been amended.

Any feedback would be appreciated.  I'm now going to work on giving feedback to others.

I have been granted an extension on my assignment due to the death of my grandmother but will try to get my feedback out in time for others to complete their assignments in time.

Thanks everyone

Looking at it today I see that still have a lot more to go.  I thought that I had done more than I actually had...disappointing

Here is a link to my spreadsheet so far:

There are a lot of blanks in this document.

Thank you to the ladies that have said that they will assist me and for their sympathy in the death of my Grandmother, she was a wonderful lady, I can only hope to live as long as her almost 96 years.

Once again thanks.

Struggle Town

Ahhhhh ... I'm having so much difficulty with this assignment #2.  I restated the Balance Sheet no problems but my Changes in Equity and Income Statements are so different from all the examples that I've found.  It's really doing my head in.

Then in Step 3, my company doesn't have any products at the moment they are still in the R&D stage. How am I suppose to guesstimate what the costs and selling prices might be????

On top of all this my Grandmother died last week and I've got to deal with all the family fall out.  I live/d with her during the week and cared for her in-between work and my study.  Now how so much stuff to deal with as well as my grief and this stupid assignment that I can't get my head around.

Needless to say I don't think I'll get my draft finished in time for today's upload.

Back to work ...

Onwards and upwards

Well as soon as we finish one assignment we have to start the next one and the SPA.

I hope everyone else was happy with the grade they received from their assignment #1.

Not only did I have my assignment due last week but my 95 year old grandmother, who I stay with during the week in Brisbane as I work in town and live on the Sunshine Coast, fell and had mix-up after mix-up in the hospital, finally had her shoulder replaced.  So needless to say it was a stressful week, now I paid the price for it and was sick all this week.

So it's back into study now.  I'm looking at it as having my week off early :)

Ekka and the westerly's always bring on the cold and flu season at work and then when I come home on the weekend my partners son brought it home from his school as well.  There was no way I was going to miss out on that.  Thank goodness for the flu shot otherwise it may have been worse.

Grandma is improving, haven't been able to visit her in the hospital as the last thing she needs now is pneumonia on top of everything else.  So that has meant that I've been able to get home at a reasonable hour and make a decent meal and some rest.  First assignment is finished, marked and I did pretty well in it.

So onward in the course and upward in the marks...hopefully.

Favourite Blogs

Top blog is by Carmen Berkahn titled ‘Going a Little Nuts’
Carmen has been very active on her blog and on the forums in Moodle.  She has added humour and personal details to her blog and it is very informative.  Really enjoy her blog and it inspires me to complete more of my assignment.

Second favourite blog belongs to Carly Gregg, self-titled
Carly has put a lot of work into her blog, adding a number of posts with links to articles and videos regarding her company.

And ranked number three is ‘Globetrotter’ by Alexandra Leibowitz
Alexandra’s company is in a similar field to mine and is experiencing similar risks.

With the correct link now ... sorry Alexandra.

Assignment 1 - Step 2 for comment and feedback

Prana Biotechnology’s History

Prana Biotechnology is an Australian company that is governed by Australian Law and trades in Australian dollars.  It was incorporated in Melbourne, Australia in 1997.  The company is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX: PBT) in 2000 and listed on the NASDAQ (NASDAQ: PRAN) in 2002.

Prana Biotechnology falls under the Australian Government tax incentive scheme relating to eligible research and development activities, introduced on 1 July 2011.  This means that entities with an aggregated turnover for the income year of less than A$20 million will be entitled to a 45% refundable tax offset.  Here is a link to the announcement that  Prana receives $6.8 million R&D Tax Incentive Refund http://pranabio.com/news/prana-receives-6-8-million-rd-tax-incentive-refund

The earliest beginnings of Prana Biotechnology began in the laboratory of Professor Rudo9lph Tanzi at Massachusetts General Hospital in the 1980’s when he was investigating the molecular and genetic basis of neurological disease.  Prana Biotechnology is developing first-in-class therapies to treat neurodegenerative disease.

The Company’s lead drug candidate – PBT2 – is being developed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s diseases.  The Company is targeting lodgment of a New Drug Application for Huntington’s disease in 2016/2017 pending positive trial results.  Prana Biotechnology also has advanced a drug candidate for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders (PBT434) and brain cancer (PBT519), which are in pre-clinical toxicology testing.  Development of PBT434 has received funding from the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Parkinson’s UK.

Prana Biotechnology are pleased to announce the Orphan Drug designation by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).  Orphan drug designation is granted to promote the development of drugs for diseases affecting less than 200,000 people in the United States.  Orphan drug designation entitles Prana to seven years of market exclusivity for the use of PBT2 in the treatment of Huntington Disease; protocol assistance by the FDA to optimize drug development in the preparation of a dossier that will meet regulatory requirements; and reduced fees associated with applying for market approval.

Appointing Professor Ira Shoulson as a non-executive Director is pivotal in charting a course to develop PBT2 as a treatment for Huntington Disease.  Professor Shoulson’s experience and insight as a former FDA advisor will be invaluable during preparation of the End of Phase 2 meeting with the US FDA.  Here is an interview with Professor Ira Shoulson http://www.brr.com.au/event/123434/
Elsevier Business Intelligence named PBT2 as one of the Top 10 Neuroscience projects to watch in the world, this was followed by a report in the Aging Cell journal, which showed PBT2 reversed memory and cognitive loss in aged mice.

Here is a link to a Channel 9 news story that aired regarding the level 3 clinical trial that Prana Biotechnology is working on.  New Alzheimer's Drug News Story

What Concerns do I have at this Stage?

I am happy with the company that has been selected for me.  I appreciate that it is an Australian company and in a field that I know a little about.  My sister previously worked for Sonic Clinical Trials in Sydney, where she tested all the samples for numerous clinical drug trials and we had some discussions, without breaking any confidentially, on clinical trials.  As a Lions member I have visited the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute at the Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital Centre’s for Health Research and UQ’s Diamantina Institute, speaking with researchers and listening to lectures on their work.

I’m quite ‘old school’ and like the feel of paper and being able to flick through a large publication such as an annual report and these annual reports are 70 – 116 pages each.  I find that a bit difficult to read on screen.

Formatting of the three different annual reports including the financial reporting is slightly different.  The company has run at a loss for at least the last 4 years.  Not sure how they can keep running.

When entering the financial statements into our company spreadsheet I was wondering if there was a way to link the total of the Reserves from the Statement of Changes in Equity to the Reserves amount in the Balance Sheet.  In the examples that I found the Statement of Changes in Equity wasn’t that detailed as to include the Issued and Unissued Capital and Reserves.

My nominated company has been operating at a loss for at least the past 5 years.  It seems strange that a company can continue to make such losses and still operate.  Upon further reading, I discovered that they are eligible for the Australian Government tax incentive scheme relating to eligible research and development activities, introduced on 1 July 2011.  This assists them in continuing to operate.

News Article

Was watching the news last night and this story came on, it is about my company going into Phase 3 of the clinical trial for the IMAGINE drug for Alzheimer's Disease.

New Alzheimer's Drug News Story

Not to sure how this will work, first time adding video to blog .... fingers crossed

Finding this strange

I'm finding this a little bit strange.  I'm not use to accepting friend requests from people that I don't actually know and haven't met before...but that is all part of this learning...moving out of our comfort zones.

Starting to get a bit more comfortable with this now, understanding the purpose the blog in our study.  It's been reassuring reading that most other students are new to blogging as well.

I have found that you can't comment or add a post on a number of other student's blogs.  Is anyone else finding this?  I went through the 'Find your company' spreadsheet and found those others with similar fields as my company and tried to 'follow' them but haven't been able to link with their pages.  Thought it might be easier to comment on information regarding their companies if they were in similar fields.

Hoping this will all start to become routine soon ... doubtful but who knows...

Hello there,

This is my very first post on my very first blog.

Is there anyone else out-there who has created their first blog for a uni course?
